Summary of Unit

Welcome to Health! I am looking forward to get to know each and everyone of you. This unit will cover the importance of a different health concepts related to family life including nutrition, personal health, safety and injury prevention, tobacco, alcohol and other drug use prevention. Students will learn the basics of nutrition and what a healthy diet consists of. Not only will they be able to design a healthy diet but they will also be able to understand the importance of eating healthy and exercising. Students will also learn the negative affects that drug and alcohol have on our bodies and the consequences that they face when they abuse them. Students will learn how their families influence their everyday decisions regarding health and safety and will be able to recognize situations that threaten their own safety and health. By the end of the unit students will have completed many different assignments including a movie, brochure, blog and digital story. Each assignment will help students to differentiate between what a healthy lifestyle looks like versus an unhealthy lifestyle.

Students will be able to..
Describe the importance nutrition has on everyones health.
• Judge which types of activities and diets are good for them.
• Design a lifestyle that is considered healthy.
• Analyze the side effects of drug/alcohol abuse.
•Sympathize with people suffering from acute and chronic illness.
•Recognize situations that threatens safety and personal health.

Performance Task:
• Understand what a healthy lifestyle looks like.
•Be able to evaluate your own safety and health.
• Learn about how your family has influenced your health.


Expectations

Assignements are required to be turned in on time unless students are absent or prior arrangements have been made. If a student is absent they are expected to see me when better to make up missed assignments. Students will be given a day for every day they are absent to make-up their work. Students will lose points everyday an assignement is late. Students will be given the chance to revise work when necessary for an improved grade and must hand in previous drafts with edited ones.
Participation is a critical comonent of this class and students are expected to arrive to class on time and prepared.
Academic Honesty and integrity are important quali ties of students. Students will be expected to follow MBHS Code of Academic Integrity.


Benchmarks : below is the point value for each assessment and your grade will be based on the percent of points earned from a total of 420.

Attendance and Participation (90 points)
Student’s are expected to be present at all classes and prepared to participate. For every class absent or unprepared 5 points will be deducted off of your attendance and participation grade unless you have seen me.


Wikispace (30)
Each pair is expected to create a wikispace providing tips and information for a celebrity of their choice. These tips and information will be providing their celebrity with ideas on how they could improve their diet, exercise and overall health. Each pair will base their information on the USDA pyramid will be asked to help improve their celebrities overall health. A rubric will be provided with assignment.


Digital Story (30)
Students will prepare a digital story based on healthy and unhealthy diet/exercise choices. This story will include dietary/physical activity facts. A rubric will be provided with assignment.

Webquest (30)
Each student will complete a webquest assessing their diet and their families. This webquest asks students to figure out their BMI, calories intake and analyze their diet. Each student is expected to complete the webquest for credit.

Paper & Blog (30)
Students will be asked to write a paper/blog based on the importance of mental health. This blog will include different facts on mental health, tips to relieve stress, personal experiences, etc. Students will be asked to include external links in the rubric and reflect on what they learned about their own mental health. A rubric will be provided with assignment.

Interview& Blog (30)
Students will interview a person with experience with a specific drug and will be asked to share their interview with the class. Students will be given specific facts to research and must present their interview and blog to the class.

Brochure/Comic-Life (30)
Students will create a brochure or comic-life promoting the importance of safety. This brochure should teach people about the importance of safety and include teen accident facts. A rubric will be provided with assignment.
